Prospect News: The Stash List Volume 3: Ben Rice Boils
Jackson Holliday is not on this list. One of the few rules I’ve used here is that if you’re a major leaguer in the current season, you’re off the roster. Holiday cashed those big league game checks, so he won’t be represented here. Neither will Tyler Black even though I’m writing this part on Friday and I’m thinking about her name Rebecca.
1. Yankees BY Jason Dominguez | 21 | AAA
He went through the minors during his rehab, and the time may be now that Juan Soto is battling arm pain.
2. Tribes of James Wood | 21 | Il
He has missed time with a hamstring injury but is reportedly stepping up baseball activities, such as spitting out sunflower seeds and adjusting his mug.
3. Tigers 3B Jace Jung | 23 | AAA
It’s a pretty big drop from two to three spots here, but Jung is slashing .302/.409/.552 with five home runs since May 1, which is right in line with his season numbers. Justin-Henry Malloy beat out Jung for the leadoff spot and is starting to heat up there, but Detroit has room to add another belt or two.
4. Rays 3B Junior Caminero | 20 | Il
He strained his quad in late May and will miss four to six weeks. I will take over. Tampa Bay is currently 31 and 32 and has no pressing needs in the infield.
5. Yankees C/1B Ben Rice | 25 | AAA
Rice has played just three games in Triple-A and already has three hits and a steal. He had 12 homers and eight steals in 49 Double-A games, good for a full season of 45 home runs and 27 stolen bases. He’s listed as an all-around catcher and will be an intriguing fantasy piece if he can crack the frame while maintaining that fitness. He’s still playing behind the plate in the minors but he’s hitting as an everyday shortstop in an organization that doesn’t have that type of player. Current first baseman Anthony Rizzo turns 35 in August and has an 86 wRC+ this season after posting a 100 wRC+ last year. That’s not good enough to be a daily number one contender.
6. Orioles 3B Coby Mayo | 22 | Il
He broke a rib in mid-May and is expected to miss “a few weeks.” I will take over. Baltimore is 40 and 22 and has no pressing need in the infield.
7. Tigers RHP Jackson Jobe | 21 | AA IL
He injured his hamstring on May 1 and should be back on the mound soon.
8. Dodgers SS Trey Sweeney | 24 | AAA
Sweeney’s season-long hitting streak isn’t great, but he’s been the league’s hottest hitter over the past few weeks, knocking in eight runs over his last 12 games while hitting .375/.426/.979. A 6’3” left-handed hitter the club acquired from the Yankees in exchange for 2B Jorbit Vivas and LHP Victor Gonzalez, Sweeney should look like a demon cutter for 2B Gavin Lux and his 57 wRC+ around now.
9. Blue Jays 3B Orelvis Martinez | 22 | AAA
He hit his 15th home run Friday night, tied for the International League lead with Cardinals 1B Luken Baker. The month of May was not kind to Martinez, but he still hit six home runs despite hitting .205 with 28 hits. He’s hitting just .136 so far in June, but his Friday night homer has given him back-to-back bombs and could signal the start of a fun summer. Toronto is 30 and 33 as of Saturday morning and just three games out of the wild card spot despite a slow start. I know nobody is looking for wild card spots these days, but Martinez is not the type of player the timeline needs to be attached to. I mean, he’s a great prospect, but he’s probably not saving $30 million down the line by artificially increasing his timeline.
10. Rangers 1B Jhonkensy Noel | 22 | AAA
Over the past month, Noel is slashing .345/.424/.664 with an 18.4 percent slugging percentage and nine home runs in 28 games. The club recently brought up Jonathan Rodriguez all week and brought him back down, and he hit three home runs in Friday night’s game. The way is not clear for Noel, but he can have an impact on our game if he can get his chance when he is in rhythm.
