Jaron “Boots” Ennis has a new opponent to defend his IBF welterweight title on July 13 in his hometown of Philadelphia. The 31-0 champion was supposed to face 22-0 Cody Crowley, but an eye problem forced Cody to pull out. Replacing Crowley will be 30-4-1 former graduate David Avanesyan.
“I would like to thank Matchroom, Eddie Hearn, Frank Smith and Tom Dallas, the legal teams and my long-time manager Neil Marsh for this great opportunity,” Avanesyan said. “Jaron Ennis is a world-class boxer that I have a lot of respect for and a potential superstar, and on July 13, we’ll find out if he really is. Although he’s 35 years old now, Avanesyan still has a lot of ring experience, having faced the likes of Lamont Peterson and signee Terence Crawford.
Needless to say, Avanesyan is thrilled to have another shot at ring glory. He says: “When I received an invitation to go to such a difficult fight with such a respected fighter, I didn’t have to be asked twice, especially if it was a world title. This is what I like, I’m strong and tough and ready – let’s get it!”
Despite the gratitude, Avanesyan also realizes that an opportunity like this will never come again. “I promise all the fans that I will give everything to win this world title,” he said. “This is my last chance for a world title and I have to take it. I respect Ennis and his work as he was flawless, but he has what I want and need.”
Suffice it to say, Avanesyan isn’t the only one happy with how things turned out. “Now that Crowley is officially not my opponent, I actually like Avanesyan as a better opponent,” Ennis said. “He will fight a better fight, which is what I want. On July 13, don’t miss this beautiful, outstanding performance!”
Although few can predict the future, Ennis has long been considered the making of a legitimate official. He has been looking for a big fight for a while. Although a mega bout has so far eluded him, the 26-year-old has been overlooked for so long. Unless, of course, Avanesyan finds a way to shock the world next month in Philly.
