Ind vs SA – women’s series – 1st ODI – Harmanpreet Kaur claims scorecard for multi-format series

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur is sticking with the points system for the multi-format series, saying it will make things “very challenging”.

India’s home series against South Africa begins with the first of three ODIs on Sunday in Bengaluru, followed by one Test and three T20Is in Chennai. The points program does not exist in the exchange.

“It is entirely up to the BCCI or the ICC [to decide],” said Harmanpreet on the eve of the start of the series. “But as a player, when these things are there, the players are more into the game and the players are motivated. If the points system is there, it’s a big challenge and it will be good to have it.”

Currently, the women’s Ashes series uses a four-point scoring system for Tests (four for a win and two for a draw), with two for a match of fewer overs. Whoever finishes with the most points wins the Ashes. This program was introduced for the first time in the 2013 series in England to keep the entire series consistent.

In 2021, the points system was used again for India’s tour of England, the first time it was used outside of the Ashes. India lost the series by 10-6 points. India’s last all-format series – against Australia at home in December 2023-January 2024 – did not use a points system with each format considered separate.

It was also India’s last ODI as they focused on the upcoming T20 World Cup, to be played in October in Bangladesh.

Sunday’s match will be only India’s seventh ODI since 2023. As for next year’s ODI World Cup, they have already secured automatic qualification as hosts. However, to remove the rust from the format, India had two separate camps in Bengaluru and Mumbai before the South Africa series, playing a few practice matches while at it.

“We take it as an opportunity,” said Harmanpreet. “These days we play a lot of T20 matches but ODIs are something where, as a player, you have a lot of time to test yourself and test yourself and conditions. It’s good for us that we get a lot of matches to express ourselves.

“It’s good for us that we get more time in the middle and we play all three types of players.”

There was good news for India ahead of the first match with Harmanpreet confirming that both Jemimah Rodrigues and Pooja Vastrakar were fit for selection. Rodriguez missed the recent tour of Bangladesh due to a back niggle, while the status and nature of Vastrakar’s injury was unclear when the BCCI announced the squad.
