Babar Azam says he hasn’t thought about Pakistan captaincy yet and his future lies with PCB

Babar Azam’s future as the captain of the white teams in Pakistan is still unclear. After their early exit, Babar was under pressure even though he had just resumed the position of captain, but he said he would make a call after meeting and reviewing the World Cup with the decision makers at the PCB.

“When I left the position of captain [in 2023], I thought I shouldn’t do it now, that’s why I left it and announced myself,” said Babar. “When they returned it to me, it was the PCB’s decision. When I go back, we will discuss everything that happened here. And if I have to leave the captaincy, I will announce it openly. I will not hide anything. Everything that happens will happen in the open. But right now, I haven’t thought about it. Ultimately it is the PCB’s decision.”

Babar was asked if he took responsibility for early exit as captain. “I told you that we did not lose this because of one person,” said Babar. “We win and lose as a team. He reveals that [I am] captain, but I can’t play for every player. There are 11 players, and each of them has a role. That’s why they came here to play the World Cup. I think we couldn’t play well as a team. We have to settle down and accept that we didn’t play well as a team.

“We accept that we did not play as we expected. The type of team we had, the experience we had, we failed to achieve different goals. I, as a player and as a captain, am not leaving. I am single. [anyone] outside. The error is in all 15. We will keep updating. As captain, my responsibility is to give my feedback to the decision makers.”

Babar was also asked who should be held responsible: the captain, the coach or the selectors. “You cannot blame one person,” said Babar. “We didn’t play well as a team. We did well in teams. Everyone is disappointed. We are disappointed as fans. It’s not one person’s fault.”
