Tank Davis Vs. Lomachenko: Resumption of Unity Talks, Targets Year-End Clash

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has confirmed that unification talks between boxer, IBF lightweight champion, Vasily Lomachenko, and regular Gervonta “Tank” Davis will begin next week.

If the fight is on, Tank Davis’ WBA and Lomachenko’s IBF titles will be on the line in this highly anticipated two-fight unification fight. The winner of the fight will be considered the #1 guy in the lightweight division.

Target date: November/December

Arum looks at the battle of Tank vs. Lomachenko in November or December, which would be a great time to give the boxing community a big fight later in the year.

This could be the biggest fight of 29-year-old Gervonta Davis’ career, 11, as he has never faced a fighter as high as Lomachenko in a 50-50 fight. Given Tank’s big step up in class, we don’t know how he’ll respond against this kind of talent.

Tank was knocked out last Saturday by Frank Martin until he knocked him out in the eighth round, and he is not considered a top-class boxer.

Davis will have to elevate his game significantly to defeat Lomachenko because this typical style of playing possum for five to seven rounds, waiting for an opportunity to land a one-punch homerun, may not work against the hard-hitting Loma.

The fighting style of the tank is very simple and predictable. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Lomachenko has seen fighters like Tank Davis throughout his successful novice journey, and he may take him to school to embarrass the one-trick pony.

You can’t blame Tank Davis’ promoters for protecting him all these years, keeping him undefeated, and making him a star without facing dangerous opposition. It was a good hustle.

Other Options

Arum mentions that the talks between Tank and Lomachenko had started, which was the continuation of the talks. If Team Tank wants this fight, we’ll see it happen next. Lomachenko is more than them as he has been calling him every time for the past seven years and he has met with a challenge.

If the Davis-Lomachenko fight doesn’t happen, Tank will probably consider a fight with Ryan Garcia or Shakur Stevenson. Those were two other names Tank Davis mentioned last Saturday as guys who like to fight.

A rematch with Ryan will be difficult, as he is facing a suspension from the New York State Athletic Commission, and may not be available until next year.
