T20 World Cup 2024 – Afg vs Ind – Matthew Hayden and Ian Bishop talk about Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah

Kohli has so far scored 1, 4 and 0 in his three innings in the group stage. However, his form before that was excellent – he was the leading run-scorer in IPL 2024 with 741 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 154.69, the highest in an IPL season.

“Kohli is in any case a world-class player,” Hayden said Star Sports Press Room. “These [Caribbean] these are the places where you have to build the innings and think about the kind of realistic totals that can happen in these different places.

“Apart from St Lucia, the average score is between 160-170 and Virat, with all his experience, will be able to figure out what to do, like hitting windward spin, depending on how important it is.

Hayden was also firm in his assessment that opening alongside Rohit Sharma was Kohli’s best option in T20s or teams turning around early against him.

“I also said during the IPL, if Kohli is going to be in the team, he must open,” said Hayden. “Virat at three, I don’t think we’ll get the best out of him. You can’t just come out and blast 250 on these wickets, you need cricketers who think.

“He needs to continue to have a high strike rate. We’ve clearly seen a pattern emerge here in the World Cup where those six overs. [powerplay], you have to be ahead of the game. It’s very hard to catch you”

“You look back at the way David Warner played in this World Cup – in Barbados he was hitting a lazy wicket, he made 30. [39 in 16 balls vs England]. It was a really well-built thirty. It depends on what your benchmark is. Are you looking at 100s, 50s, strike rate?

“The way Warner came out was good [tough] wicket and blew the match, that’s what Kohli will be challenged with in the Caribbean. Just let him go. He will show why the Indian selectors trust him in this position.”

But Hayden also had a word of caution for Kohli.

“He needs to continue to have a big strike,” Hayden said. “We have clearly seen a pattern here in the World Cup where those six overs [powerplay], you have to be ahead of the game. It is very difficult to catch. If you look at the back-half of the game, it’s a problem. You must be a clinic in the first ten.”

Bishop on Bumrah: ‘This guy is a bowler’

“Jasprit is intelligent, he is a person who knows how to talk and thinks about the game,” said the Bishop. “It starts with the foundation, but he has come up with changes and knows better than most skaters when to use his differences.

“You hear him say, ‘it’s not every day that I go wicket-hunting – there are days when I bowl my yorker on the off-stump, days when I bowl a wide yorker; there are days when I check the conditions and bowl my slower ball on the pitch. or use my bouncer’ Moreover, you have other ingredients.

“He has a unique action where the ball comes to you faster than the batsmen expected, a full toss. [that got Iftikhar, for example] it’s because of that. Sometimes they don’t break because they come to you. Of course, if you develop that name… when I was throwing with Curtly Ambrose, Matthew [Hayden] never put a bad foot to Curtly for his name’s sake, but he would look to smash me. This guy is a general bowler.”
