The Liverpool coach will leave the club after 15 years of constant change

Liverpool’s long-serving goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season in a bid to shake up the backroom staff.

Achterberg has been a coach at Liverpool since 2009, starting with the academy before joining the first team in the summer of 2011. During that time, the 52-year-old has worked under three different managers in Sir Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers. and Jurgen Klopp.

But instead of continuing to reign as fourth when partner Arne Slot arrived from Feyenoord this summer, Achterberg opted to follow Klopp out the door. Assistant manager Pep Lijnders and elite development coach Vitor Matos have also been confirmed to stay on.

“After 15 years at the club, I have decided with a heavy heart to leave LFC,” Achterberg, who moved to Merseyside in 1998 as a Tranmere Rovers player, wrote on Instagram.

“It’s been an incredible and wonderful journey for me and my family. I’ve loved every day working at this amazing club, but after a long time I think it might be right for me to start a new challenge.

“I’d like to thank FSG for all their support over those 15 years – Mike Gordon, John Henry, Tom Werner and Billy Hogan. It’s been an honor to work for the biggest and greatest club in world football and their amazing fans. Scouse or non-Scouse, I loved them all around the world.

“A big thank you to our manager Jurgen Klopp. What a joy he gives us all. Klopp made all our dreams come true at LFC. He is one of them [the] the best managers in the history of the city, the club and world football. He built world-class teams with his people management skills, brought us back to being believers, winners, and a force in European and world football.

“I personally cannot thank him enough for everything he has done for me and my family, for the confidence he has given me to do my job to the best of my ability, happiness, motivation and great leadership.

Achertberg has worked with goalkeepers Pepe Reina, Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius at Liverpool, but has enjoyed success coaching Brazil stopper Alisson since 2018.
