T20 World Cup 2024 – Ban vs Ind – Rohit Sharma on batting vs Bangladesh – That’s the way we want to play going forward

Rohit Sharma is convinced that India’s way of beating Bangladesh – of coming out hard from the first ball – is “the way we want to play”.

“I’ve been talking about that for a long time,” Rohit said after India’s 50-run win over Bangladesh, which finally sealed the 2024 T20 World Cup as they look ahead. “It’s about going there to work knowing what is expected of us, what we have to do and how we have to play.

“If we look at everything, we played very well. We were flexible. There are elements [like the wind] you need to pay attention and be smart about how to choose those options. We were smart with batting, and with the ball. All in all it was a great effort.”

India made 196 after batting, Virat Kohli’s 28 balls (from 37) long innings and Hardik Pandya’s 50 not out (from 27 balls) the highest scores. There was a good performance by Rishabh Pant (36 off 24), while Rohit hit 11 off 23 balls and Shivam Dube hit 34 off 24 balls.

“Look, all eight batsmen need to play their role, whatever it is,” Rohit said. “We saw one boy get fifty, but we still got 198 [196]. In T20s, I don’t believe you need to get fifties and hundreds. How you can put pressure on the opposition is what matters.

“All the batsmen have been trying to do that since the beginning. It’s the way we want to play and motivate ourselves to go forward. Yes, you have to understand the conditions, but we have a lot of experience in the team, too. We support them to use that experience on the field.”

“Today was a good example of what he can do with batting. He is a very important player for us. If he can continue to do that, we will be in a good place.”

Anil Kumble, India’s former captain and coach, called the approach “refreshing”.

“You want the batsmen to come in and face the bowlers,” Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 TimeOut programme. “This is a format where you can’t go in, sit back, and let the good bowlers bowl their four overs.

“You have to show intent and drive the bowlers forward, so it was exciting from a batting point of view. Yeah, maybe if you look at the way they came out, you’d probably expect them to continue. But, this way, you can look at the way they came out. I want them to work hard. Even Rishabh Pant – thumbs up, four and he wanted to sweep.
