My ball hit my foot on the tap. Is that a penalty? Rules Guy

What are the rules about accidentally hitting your foot on a faucet?

The Rules of Golf are tricky! Thank you, we have a guru. Our Rules Guy knows the book from front to back. Have a question? You have all the answers.

Does the new law about not being fined if you hit yourself with the ball while shooting also apply to cancer? Careful not to get in another player’s line, I stood on the other side of the hole and tried to tap a six incher but missed and the ball hit my foot – probably the only person to ever accomplish that (pun intended). —Josh Weimer, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Mr. Weimer, please leave the punning to the experts. And, folks, 2019 isn’t really “new” anymore.

In any case, Rule 11.1b applies everywhere on the course: If you make a stroke and hit yourself on the putting green, there is no penalty and you play the ball as it lies.

Rules Guy: Are putters allowed to exceed 48 inches in length?

Rules Guy

My friend’s putter has a forked back part. He hit a putt off the green out of the air and it landed on the fork. Is there a punishment, and what should we have done? —Richard Barnes, Clarkston, Wash.

If you think that the putter is, in fact, consistent, if your friend follows the rules correctly he was not completely put.

According to rule 11.1b(1), when the swinging ball lands above (or, in this case, inside) the swinging outside influence, the player must drop the ball in the relief area of one club.

That area is based on the immediate area where the ball first landed on that club and in the same area of the course, not near the hole. There is no penalty.

The ball into the putter … there’s a first for everything.
