Barcelona have confirmed that defender Lucy Bronze will leave the club when her contract expires at the end of the month.
Bronze, 32, joined the Catalan giants ahead of the 2022/23 season and enjoyed a successful, trophy-laden two years at the club. He won two league titles, two Champions League winners’ medals, one Queen’s Cup and two Spanish Super Cups.
The defender played 70 times for Barcelona across the two years and scored five goals in that time. In his first campaign, he played 32 games, up from 38 last term.
In a statement, Barcelona confirmed that Bronze will not renew the contract he signed two years ago.
90 min he understands that Barcelona had to participate financially in renewing Bronze’s contract. The veteran right-back was one of the club’s top earners and any new deal would have affected their ability to pull off other deals this summer.
There is growing interest in Bronze from the NWSL, where the Kansas City Current hold the rights to the right-back, but Paris Saint-Germain are also notable figures.
Talking to FourFourTwo at the beginning of last season, Bronze talked about his future and did not make it clear that he will return to England.
“Never say no,” she said.
“I’m open to opportunities – my career has shown that. I like different challenges in different places. Although my family lives in England, I have a home wherever I am in the world and I really like playing for Barcelona.
“I don’t know what the future holds – whether I stay here, come back to England one day or join another team in another country and try to achieve the same success. I’m always looking to challenge myself.”
Bronze originally joined Barcelona from WSL side Manchester City after England’s Euro 2022 triumph.
Previously, Bronze also represented European giants, Lyon, where he won three Champions League titles, bringing his total in the competition to five. The defender had two separate spells at City, and also spent short spells at Everton and Liverpool.
