Mason Greenwood’s transfer away from Man Utd has been revealed

Marseille are the latest club to be linked with Mason Greenwood as Manchester United attempt to make a permanent move to transfer the first.

Greenwood’s loan spell at Getafe, where he scored eight goals in 33 La Liga games, is over and it remains to be seen if his next move will be away from Old Trafford.

United had hoped to restore Greenwood to their first team after charges of assault, attempted rape and violent conduct were dropped after key witnesses were withdrawn. But a furious backlash led to a decline.

The likes of United have long been linked with a permanent sale, with Juventus, Lazio, Napoli Barcelona and Atletico Madrid all among those linked with the 22-year-old.

Athletic reports that Marseille is “exploring the deal”, with negotiations still in its infancy and financial details still to be discussed. But the French side are described as “wanting to hire” Greenwood, who is said to favor Marseille over other potential options at this stage.

Roberto De Zerbi is set to become the new manager of Marseille after leaving Brighton & Hove Albion. The club competed in the qualifying rounds for the Champions League and then the Europa League in 2023/24, reaching the semi-finals of the latter competition. But a disappointing eighth place finish in Ligue 1 means no European football at the Stade Velodrome next year.

Marseille relied heavily on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for goals last season, with the 35-year-old netting 30 in all competitions. Top scorers were defender Chancel Mbemba and former Sheffield United striker Iliman Ndiaye with six each, so there is a need for more firepower.

The club’s last Ligue 1 title was in 2010, and their most recent trophy was in 2012. However, they have kept the history of French football as they are nine national champions – only Saint-Etienne (10) and Paris Saint-Germain (12) have won. more – and they remain the only French winner of the European Cup.

United are reportedly eyeing a £30m transfer fee for Greenwood, although failure to command what is considered an acceptable fee could see the club open up a 12-month contract until 2026 and consider a second loan move. That situation could bring Getafe back into the picture.
