Chelsea midfielder completes transfer to Real Madrid

Melanie Leupolz has completed a move to Real Madrid after four years with Chelsea, where she won four WSL titles, three FA Women’s Cups and the Conti Cup.

The 30-year-old former Germany international is the third to arrive at Real Madrid this week following the signing of 2022/23 Liga F top scorer Alba Redondo from Levante and former Manchester City midfielder Filippa Angeldahl.

Leupolz joined Chelsea in 2020 after six years at Bayern Munich and was immediately instrumental as the Blues won the domestic treble in his first season. Her pregnancy was announced in March 2022 and she was accepted into the team in early 2023 following maternity leave.

Leupolz scored his last goal for Chelsea on the final day of the 2023/24 season in a 6-0 thrashing by Manchester United at Old Trafford that gave the club a fifth successive WSL title.

“Chelsea is more than just a football club,” the player said in a parting statement. “It’s a family and I’m proud to have been a part of it for four years. This club and everyone associated with it will always have a special place in my heart. I wish you success in the future, Blues.”

Real Madrid came into existence in 2019, originally CD Tacon after taking over the club, renamed the following year. They are yet to win a major trophy but finished second in Liga F behind runaway champions Barcelona in three of the last four seasons, reaching the Copa de la Reina final again in 2022/23 – losing on penalties in the city. rivals Atletico.
