The Mets announced that they have designated the right-hander’s contract Eric Orze from Triple-A Syracuse. The boy is good Adcock optioned to Triple-A in the corresponding move.
Adcock was one of three relievers to see action in the Mets’ 14-2 loss to the Pirates last night, and Adcock had a rough night allowing six runs over 1 2/3 innings of work. Today’s deal brings a new arm to New York’s bullpen, and puts the 26-year-old Orze in a position to make his Major League debut.
A fifth-round pick of the Mets in the pandemic-shortened 2020 draft, Orze had a long journey to start his professional career, overcoming testicular cancer and skin cancer during his days at the University of New Orleans. He quickly moved up the minor league ladder to Triple-A at the end of the 2021 season, but has since remained in top company for parts of four seasons now, posting a 4.64 ERA over 159 frames with Syracuse.
Home runs and walks have been Orze’s biggest problems, as he has a 1.4 HR/9 walk rate and a 12.28% strikeout rate in his Triple-A career. Especially this season, Orze has a 1.64 HR/9 and a 13.3% walk rate, yet he has continued to miss bats admirably. His 33.9% strikeout rate is the best ever in his three full seasons at Syracuse, and he has a 31.72K% overall in Triple-A.
It’s possible that Orze’s pick could result in the proverbial cup of coffee in the majors, but with the Mets looking to fill holes in an injury-riddled bullpen, there’s a chance Orze will get more time in the active lineup if he plays well. . He will join an extensive group of right-handers in the Mets bullpen that features only one healthy left arm Jake Diekman.
