Bukayo Saka is ‘proud’ of chasing away Euro 2020 demons with Swiss heroes

Bukayo Saka has admitted he is proud to see himself overcome the pressure of missing out on the Euro 2020 final to play a key role in England’s victory over Switzerland on Saturday.

Alongside Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, Saka was the target of horrific racist abuse from England fans after missing a penalty in the Euro 2020 final, with the trio admitting they continue to struggle to process the incident.

Three years later and Saka found himself under pressure again. After scoring a brilliant goal to tie things up and send the game to penalties, the Arsenal midfielder stepped up to the plate and made no mistake this time.

“I have faith in God,” said Saka BBC after the game. “Coming back from something like that is really difficult, but today I gave it a chance.

“I’ll put it out there, special. How we fought and went to penalties… the last time we gave away penalties at the Euros, we know what happened. I believe.

“I felt like we were in control the whole game and the opportunity was going to come and I took it. I’m proud of that.”

After four dreadful games in the competition, England turned to three, and Saka was deployed at right wing-back for his best performance of the summer.

“I think it shows how much we want to win this tournament,” said Saka about England’s response. “I hope, the next game we can win in 90 minutes but if that’s what it takes – we’ll do anything!”
