France captain will need ‘help’ vs Spain – Kolo Muani

Kylian Mbappe has the “gift” to “carry” France but he needs help from his teammates in the UEFA Euro 2024 semi final against Spain, said striker Randal Kolo Muani.

Real Madrid’s new signing Mbappe was the only French player to score in the final four, converting a penalty in a 1-1 draw with Poland that advanced the World Cup final in a convincing manner.

“Seeing him not scoring, it’s up to us to help him, to push him,” said Kolo Muani, who is likely to join Mbappe in attacking France in Munich on Tuesday (20:00 BST). “I wouldn’t say it was a less successful spell. He had a great season; scored more than 45 goals.”

France vs Spain: Mbappe is “good”

France advanced to Portugal on penalties after a 0-0 draw in their quarter-final, which included Mbappe’s late substitution due to fatigue.

Mbappe missed Les Bleus’ 0-0 draw with the Netherlands after breaking his nose in France’s 1-0 opener against Austria and was sporting a custom-made face mask.

“Apart from his broken nose, he is physically healthy,” said Kolo Muani. “[Being captain is] naturally to him. He has this gift to carry the team, the team.

“He’s trained for that. He gives ideas, advice to the players. He was born for that. He was born to lead the team.”

Spain vs France ‘big’

The two-time Euro champions may need a better performance to overcome their opponents who have won all five of their games in Germany, although Spain need extra time to knock out the host nation in the round of 16.

“The games will be very difficult,” predicted Kolo Muani. “Spain is one of the best teams in this tournament, they play very good football. We love big games. We will be ready.”

The 25-year-old is one of the players who could replace Mbappe as Paris’ top scorer next season, having joined the club for an initial £64.2 million in 2023/24.

Muani scored every two games for former club Eintracht Frankfurt but has only scored six times in the league for PSG.

“It was a season I should forget quickly,” he said. “Despite that, I finished with eight goals. I was not expected to be at that level. Eight goals is not that disappointing. It’s disappointing compared to the season I had in Frankfurt.”
