While recent updates to the rules of golf allow more leeway on accidental doubles, we’re pretty sure that doesn’t apply to these shenanigans.

The golfer in question found himself on a sandy bank near a lake.

His first shot was fired into the bank and bounced back.

He reacts instinctively in an attempt to save his ball from a watery grave – and succeeds in style.

Rule 10.1a states: “If your club accidentally hits the ball more than once, there is only one stroke and no penalty.”

“Accidental deflection is, by definition, dangerous,” the USGA said. “The result in such cases is random and unpredictable, and it leads to a disadvantage for the player as often as it leads to an advantage.”

This rule is in line with the changes they have made to balls that unintentionally deflect from the player’s body if they are in motion and are not penalized again.

“Treating all wrongdoing in the same way regardless of who or what caused it will simplify the Rules by providing consistency.”

There have been trick shots that have gone viral, but the USGA has made it clear that deliberate double-putts are still allowed under the rules.

“Videos showing golfers intentionally hitting the ball twice (such as swinging around a tree) are not permitted under the Rules. Most of these videos show a player making two hits on the ball, the second being made on a moving ball, resulting in two penalties. In total, the player has scored two strokes and received a penalty of two strokes.”
