Confirmed shirt numbers for 2024/25

The 2024/25 season marks the start of a new era for West Ham United, with the east London outfit under new management.

David Moyes’ successful but divisive reign as Hammers boss has come to an end, with Spaniard Julen Lopetegui – formerly of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Real Madrid and Spain – replacing the 61-year-old. Exciting times may be ahead on the capital side.

Lopetegui is expected to be supported in his first summer at the London Stadium, and West Ham have already secured new talent. Many first-team players have also left, meaning there could be significant changes in terms of squad numbers next season.

Here are the West Ham squad numbers for the 2024/25 campaign.

West Ham are yet to confirm their numbers for the 2024/25 season but there should not be too many changes to the existing players. Another potential switch is Jarrod Bowen, currently number 20, and the England international has said he would consider switching to number 10. Lucas Paqueta could leave that number this summer if he leaves or is banned for betting offences.

Flynn Downes has returned from his loan spell at Southampton and will take up the number 12 shirt again when he stays at the London Stadium.

West Ham have added a few new faces to their squad, although they are yet to get the numbers. Max Kilman and Luis Guilherme have been the biggest signings, with the former likely to take the currently vacant number two or six.

Any midfield players will be looking at number 8, while the new striker may be given the number 11 jersey. Could Guilherme wear that shirt despite being only 18 years old?

Premier League players have plenty of options when it comes to choosing which shirt number to wear, with any number between one and 99 acceptable. Having said that, players usually choose numbers between one and 40.

The number 1 jersey is always reserved for the goalkeeper, while the players’ positions elsewhere on the pitch usually dictate whose number they wear. For example, defenders are usually between two and six, midfielders like number eight and strikers are usually number nine.

Premier League clubs must submit their full first-team squad at the start of every season, including the number they will wear for the upcoming campaign. Those signings usually happen just after the transfer window in early September.

Until then, players can change numbers freely. They don’t get a chance to do this again until the January transfer window, but even then they can’t change numbers with their teammates. They must choose an empty number from the club they play for.
