West Ham are facing competition from Saudi Arabia for the former Tottenham striker

West Ham United are said to be looking for Ajax defender Steven Bergwijn.

The Hammers are looking to inject new life into their squad this summer and have already landed defender Max Kilman and youngster Luis Guilherme. Wes Foderingham has also joined to add to West Ham’s goalkeeping options.

Next on the wish list, according to The Telegraphis a new striker and West Ham are said to be interested in bringing former Tottenham Hotspur player Bergwijn back to the Premier League.

Bergwijn, now 26, joined Tottenham Hotspur in January 2020 and made 83 appearances for the club before a dispute with manager Antonio Conte led to a departure two years later. He managed eight goals and nine assists during his time in England.

The Hammers first made their interest in Bergwijn in January but found themselves unable to comply with Financial Fair Play rules, but are now reportedly ready to make another move for the defender.

Ajax is not willing to lose Bergwijn, who scored 12 goals in 24 Eredivisie games last season.

However, the Dutch giants find themselves needing to invest in their squad after a challenging season and could be tempted to sell one of their key assets, Bergwijn being one of them, if the right bid comes along.

A bid of around €30m (£25.8m) would be enough to seal the deal and two undisclosed clubs from Saudi Arabia have made it clear they are willing to pay.

Bergwijn now has to decide if he wants to stay with Ajax or look for new pastures. His feelings on a move to the Middle East are unclear, but a return to London is thought to be attractive to the Netherlands international.
