Man United are looking for a Benfica midfielder

Manchester United expect to wrap up the final details of Matthijs de Ligt’s transfer in the next seven days or so and will focus on midfield targets such as Joao Neves, CaughtOffside you understand.

Man Utd are hoping to complete a deal for De Ligt with Bayern Munich after reaching an agreement on personal terms with the Dutch defender, and sources suggest that everything should be done next week.

The Red Devils still need to find out some details involving the financial structure and bonuses at Bayern, but they are confident of doing so, and already have some targets in mind for the midfielder, with Benfica wonderkid Neves one name on their list, meanwhile. Crystal Palace ace Adam Wharton could be a cheap alternative.

Although Neves is being valued by United and other top clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, sources have been informed CaughtOffside that Benfica appear unwilling to waive their €120 million release clause, which could see interested clubs look elsewhere this summer.

Neves transfer: Should Man Utd break the bank or go for Wharton?

Adam Wharton at Manchester United?

CaughtOffside understands Wharton is another name United are eyeing after his fine form at Palace in recent times, with the 20-year-old working in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 England squad this summer.

Palace will not want to sell so soon after signing Wharton, but it is clear that he has what it takes to play at the highest level after showing great potential early in his career.

Neves is another special talent that would suit MUFC, but Wharton would be a good alternative.

Elsewhere, a sale could be possible at United in the coming weeks, with Jadon Sancho on Juventus’ radar, or a stay at Old Trafford now looks likely after the player returned to training under Erik ten Hag this week.
