Ellis Fires Keyshawn Davis – Abdullah Mason Feud: Who Is The Lightweight Heir Apparent?
In an interview today, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ assistant trainer, Kenny Ellis, angered Keyshawn Davis when he said he thinks Abdullah Mason is the best lightweight in the division outside of Tank.
The 25-year-old Keyshawn (11-0, 7 KOs), who started his professional career with a lot of fame behind him thanks to his 2020 Olympic silver medal, feels like a younger man than Tank Davis.
The problem is, Keyshawn is failing to improve, and is not performing anywhere near the level of 21-year-old Abdullah Mason. During the Shakur Stevenson undercard on July 6 at the Prudential Center in Newark, Keyshawn was badly promoted by Mason.
While Mason stole the show with his performance of the night with his knockout of Luis Lebron in the third round, Keyshawn struggled against Miguel Madueno.
“I think the hottest lightweight right now is Abdullah Mason,” said Kenny Ellis speaking to MillCity Boxing, making it clear that he considers 21-year-old Abdullah Mason to be the best lightweight.
Keyshawn Davis: “Brother [Abdullah Mason] he wrestles at 126 pounds, and you praise him. That’s a step up. Fighting at 126 pounds, bro? A young man appeared in 126 to fight Abdullah. Do your research.”
“The Best At The 135 Division.⭐️ #nodebates,” Keyshawn said on Instagram, posting an old photo of himself, Shakur Stevenson, and Gervonta Davis, including himself between the two and writing “the best.”

Keyshawn looked shocked by the pressure Madueno put on him and turned to WWE wrestling moves, taking him down, cuffing him, straight arming him, and holding him for the rest of the night. It was a surprise that Keyshawn didn’t qualify for all the wrestling moves because I lost track of the rule bending in that fight, and it was a bad match. The higher ups at Top Rank must have been worried about what they saw in Keyshawn.
Many boxing fans feel that Keyshawn will be a gatekeeper who talks a good game outside the ring but can’t cut it against top-level opponents.
If this theory is true, then Top Rank made a mistake by signing Keyshawn, and they need to figure out what they want to do with him. Keep him close to entertainment or a speaker outside of the ringtone, or give up and consider him a lost cause.
