The Gunners are starting talks to sign Spain’s Euro 2024 hero

The Premier League season starts in a month and Arsenal have only made one signing this summer.

The Gunners have completed the signing of goalkeeper David Raya after signing him on loan last summer.

Mikel Arteta’s side are expected to sign more players with the Spaniard determined to strengthen his side’s defence, midfield and attack.

Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori, who has been in good form at the Euros, has often been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

However, another Euro 2024 coach is currently being eyed to take over and initial discussions have begun.

Real Sociedad and Spain midfielder Mikel Merino is being tipped for a move by Arsenal as they look to add a midfield partner to Declan Rice.

Journalist Dean Jones has provided the latest update on Arsenal’s pursuit of the 28-year-old midfielder, who scored Spain’s winner in the quarter-final against Germany at the Euros.

Mikel Merino to Arsenal?

Speaking on the Rank FC podcast, Jones said:

“For Arsenal, I would look at Mikel Merino. That’s right, there is something in Merino.

“I don’t know how far it has gone, I think it will be clear soon, but something has happened, at least the first conversation.”

The Gunners need stability in the middle of the park and Thomas Partey will not be relied upon due to his fitness issues.

Arsenal need a replacement for Granit Xhaka

The only permanent presence among the Gunners is Rice but he needs support as there is currently a lot of responsibility on him.

Ever since Granit Xhaka left Arsenal to join Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal’s midfielder has lacked a player who can control the game and distribute the ball to all areas of the pitch.

Merino is a player who can provide them with passing quality in the middle of the park and physical presence.
