Crawford’s Trainer BoMac: Canelo In Trouble If Crawford Wins Against Madrimov

Terence Crawford’s trainer, Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre, says Canelo Alvarez could be in trouble for Bud if he wins against WBA junior middleweight champion Israel Madrimov on August 3 at the Turki Alalshikh event on DAZN and ESPN+ PPV.

BoMac feels that Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) will be in his rhythm after a win against Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs) and will use the momentum to beat Canelo at 168 in early 2025.

It is not clear if Crawford will get the Canelo fight because the Mexican star has said that he is not interested in it. BoMac and Crawford’s dream of a Canelo fight may not happen; they will need to come down to Earth and fight a little for much less money than they ever dreamed of.

Going into the Aug. 3 fight, Crawford, 36, is rusty. He hasn’t fought since last July, when he beat Errol Spence, and that’s another long layoff for Terence.

“At the age of 36 to 37, his IQ will take him forward because he’s in the same condition as when he was 22,” trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntrye told Fighthype, speaking of his belief that Terence Crawford is better now than he was. he was young.

Crawford is in no better shape now than he was when he was 22. That is stupid. He turns 37 in September, has been around for a year, and has been fighting every year since 2020. He is not as physically fit as he was 14 years ago.

“It’s his IQ that I’m looking at. You’re smarter than boxing; he takes smart chances. We are fighting a little boy. Madrimov is 29 years old. He is coming. He has good footwork, good speed, and good strength. You put it in the box, check it, do what you have to do to win,” said BoMac

Crawford is a great boxer, but he must avoid being beaten by Madrimov because all that IQ will go to waste. The physics involved in getting hit by a fighter with the kind of offensive power that Madrimov is throwing may negate Crawford’s IQ if he can’t get a defensive shut down.

“Canelo has been in this game for a long time and we know what he is doing. If he [Crawford] he got the Canelo fight right after the Madrimov fight, he might be in trouble because he [Crawford] he’s gotten into that rhythm, he’s gotten into his groove, and it’s a good thing for Terence,” BoMac said.

It sounds like BoMac is a little intoxicated by Crawford’s past success against smaller opponents and believes he can do the same against top fighters. The opposition Crawford has been fighting at 147, 140, and 135 was not looking good. None of them have been elite, and he takes action against Madrimov.

If he gets past him, he’ll be crossing the 160-ln division and top contenders at 168, like David Benavidez, to challenge Canelo for his super middleweight titles. It is unlikely that Crawford will do anything unless he loses spectacularly.

“If he smells blood, I’m sure he’ll take it,” BoMac said when asked if he thinks Crawford can knock Canelo out. “Whoever fights Terence, it’s always a tough fight for him, and he’ll beat them easily.”

It’s hard to imagine Crawford knocking Canelo out because he can’t fight him the way he did his last three opponents, Errol Spence, Shawn Porter, or David Avanesyan, without risking getting cut. Crawford won’t knock Canelo out with a jab.

It’s good for BoMac to dream of Crawford knocking out Canelo, but it could be the other way around if Terence fights hard. He won’t be the same fighter moving up to 168 that he was at 147, and he’ll be facing far better talent than he faced in his eight classes at 147 or in his one match at 154 against Madrimov.

“And then the other wrestler has all kinds of excuses and this and that. We are used to it now,” said BoMac.

McIntrye isn’t releasing the names of other fighters who gave excuses after the loss, but we do know that Errol Spence had something to do with his inactivity.

He had not fought in the 16 months leading up to his fight with Crawford last week and had cut weight. He was involved in a horrific car accident in 2019 and suffered an eye injury.
