This week marks the start of the fall of the minor league baseball calendar.
The Arizona and Florida Complex Leagues will finish their regular seasons on Thursday before short playoff games. After the season, some of these players will go to the training camp after the 50-game season. Others will be promoted to Low-A to continue developing through in-game repetition. You can probably guess which outcome most players would choose. It would be a long season if you didn’t play a real game and about seven months.
Atlanta 3B John Gil (18, A) was promoted this week after slashing .286/.403/.389 with three home runs and 26 steals and a 16 percent slugging percentage in 51 games. While the line itself hasn’t been impressive, it has improved throughout the year and has reached Low-A so far, hitting .357 with two steals in four games. Like most Complex League youngsters, Gil needs to add strength, but time will take care of some of that, and it’s encouraging to see him play a full season of ball against much older arms.
And this week, the 2024 MLB Draft is in the books, and young players across the country are signing their contracts and reporting for duty. Where will they go? Neither knows. Well, I mean who knows, but the rhyme called me there, and it’s true enough. Teams like to put players through their paces and under the microscope before finalizing their first assignments. The influx of talent will push minor league teams to the brink. I’m especially curious what the Rangers will do with 2B Travis Bazzana. I can’t remember the last time they wrote someone so close to the hijab. They tend to screw up almost everyone, but Bazzana might benefit from a different playbook.
We are talking about the fast walkers, White Sox 3B Brooks Baldwin (23, AAA) forced a major league promotion with one full major league season under his belt. A switch-hitter at 6’1” 175 lbs, Baldwin has shot five times as a prop shooter since being selected 371st overall out of UNC Wilmington in the 2022 draft. He slashed .322/.386/.441 with six home runs and 16 stolen bases in 74 Double-A games. The big league club and fan base are in a bad place, and if Garrett Crochet and Erick Fedde are traded, the atmosphere will be sour on the south side. A home switch that never gets hit should be a welcome sight.
Dodgers RHP River Ryan he looked good in his debut. He recorded just two strikeouts in 5.1 innings, but his 94-mile-per-hour cutter is a video game. I thought there was something wrong with the radar gun. He threw six of them and got a whiff rate of 75 percent in the sample.
Orioles RHP Chayce McDermott will make his Baltimore debut today. I’ve been on this block for a long time and I’m excited to see how you get started. His results could have an impact on the club’s trade deadline plans. I wish they would have woken him up earlier to give him a few more turns before the deadline. He’s had a rough outing this month, allowing four runs in one inning on July 19 and four runs in 0.1 innings on July 6. He might have a nice debut but he’s too dangerous for contenders to spread, I think.

Royals RP Hunter Harvey he’s probably a better backup than he was in Washington, but I’ve been holding this guy for a long time for an MLB bullpen position in hopes that Closer Kyle Finnegan will be traded. I’ve had him on the list of all his recent adventures for reasons unknown to me. It was time for him to let her in to climb Rangers RHP Alejandro Rosario.
The Tigers seem to have less interest in Daywalker than Marvel Studios, so Ryan Vilade (pronounced as “Blade”) goes to the waiver wire. I’m in the second place and I’m a little bit confused, which is that you end up with a guy like Vilade anyway. I would probably pick him up if the team did. His place went to Brooks Baldwin.
Another boy I’ll pick up when he comes back, Phillies C Rafael Marchan he was just a victim of circumstance, and I don’t want to put him in his place. It went to Giants SS Tyler Fitzgerald as long as he’s hotter than F-Scott looking at the grass from the cool neighbor.
Cubs RHP Hunter Bigge he looks interesting to me, and I paid five places out of $1000 to get him just a minute ago, but I don’t know. When a group starts that bus yo-yo, I’m disappointed. Bidge Bidge has already been discounted twice for purely logical reasons, and another group has already taken his jazzy ways for $4, so this train is gone. His spot went to Tigers RHP Shelby Miller. I have Jason Foley and Dodgers RP Evan Phillips on this team. They are not good right now. Miller got the save on Tuesday night, so that was good.
