Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero is not giving Terence Crawford a chance to beat Canelo Alvarez at 168 in May 2025.
Crawford’s Weight Jump
Former WBA light welterweight champion Rolly believes Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) will not be able to handle the big jump in weight, from 154 to 168, against a fighter with the combined size, strength, and talent of a super middleweight . champion Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs).
Fans would better gauge Craword’s chances against Canelo if he shows some upside by entertaining the 168 division and fighting a top-tier opponent.
As David Benavidez and David Morrell Jr quit the 168-lb division after being treated as human. a cup of poison with Canelo, they have moved up to 175, leaving a lot of smaller fighters. But even contenders for Canelo’s throne would be a tough task for Crawford, 37, in a division he doesn’t belong in.
“If Terence Crawford goes up against Canelo, it will be a worse fight than that [Jermell] Charlo running [in his clash against Alvarez in September 2023]. Crawford’s Motivation: Money, Not Fame
One can see that Crawford is not too worried about losing to Canelo. The payday he wants. Crawford won’t get that kind of money fighting anyone else, and he has one foot out the door to retirement.
Crawford knew that if he lasted too long, he would begin to lose, be beaten, and outwitted by the young lions. It cannot be avoided.
In order for Crawford to get the kind of money he wants, he’s going to have to fight better competition, and that doesn’t bode well for him, given his age and the fact that he fights every year.
Crawford is lucky that the Honorable Turki Alalshikh is willing to pay him a ton of money to fight WBA junior middleweight champion Ismail Madrimov on a full card at the Riyadh Season event on August 3 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
Without Turki’s involvement, no promoter in the world would pay Crawford that much money to fight Madrimov. That fight doesn’t sell without a great undercard and a lot of promotion that His Majesty put into it.
