Chelsea are on the brink of extending their summer spending spree with a deal for Argentina defender Aaron Anselmino after reportedly agreeing deal and Boca Juniors.
The Blues have already signed six new players and will also include Villarreal’s £20.7m signing and Danish Under-21 goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal.
Interest in Anselmino has been heavily talked about in recent weeks, and the 19-year-old perfectly represents the profile of a player BlueCo’s ownership group have targeted as part of the club’s recruitment strategy since taking over in 2022.
Fabrizio Romano writes that Chelsea have agreed a deal with Boca for Anselmino worth more than $20m (£15.6m). The young defender is expected to travel to the UK on Monday to complete and finalize the remaining transfer procedures.
But rather than link up with Chelsea immediately, Anselmino will return to Argentina and stay with Boca on loan until “at least” January – the Argentine’s 2024 season continues.
Anselmino is a right-sided central defender and is expected to sign Chelsea’s other options at the back. Trevoh Chalobah has been left out of the pre-season away squad as Enzo Maresca still has Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo in that right-back role.
Even though he is only 26 years old, Diasi and Adarabioyo are among the oldest players in the current squad, while Anselmino seems to be regarded as the future.
Chelsea have assembled an explosive squad this summer, but outings so far have served to raise more money. Ian Maatsen was sold to Aston Villa for around £40m, while Lewis Hall’s loan from Newcastle United was made permanent in another significant £28m sale. Another £20m deal has been agreed with Ipswich Town for Omari Hutchinson.
