Gary Neville urges Tottenham to buy Postecoglou’s moves

Gary Neville hopes Tottenham will give Ange Postecoglou time to turn the club around in the coming years.

The North London side were beaten for the fourth time in a row in the Premier League by Liverpool on Sunday but have had a better season than many expected.

Spurs lost their all-time leading striker Harry Kane in the summer and changed their manager again, moving away from the guidance of big names like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte and investing in a project manager.

Postecoglou has brought Celtic back to the top of the Scottish Premiership and seems ready to move up to the top division in England.

He made an immediate impact in the capital, going unbeaten in his first 10 league games before a number of injuries hampered Tottenham’s momentum.

In 2024, they have not been at their best and have scored 13 goals in their last four games.

They are in danger of missing out on the Europa League if they do not win two of their last three games against Burnley, Manchester City and Burnley.

But Neville – who worked under the greatest manager of all time in Sir Alex Ferguson – says he understands how Postecoglou is trying to fit in at Spurs and is urging fans to give him time to shape his team.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I don’t know if there is a bit of fatigue or a bit of a break at the end.

“The manager looks – and I say this with respect – like he has less hope for them at this point than at the start of the season.

“If Spurs are playing the way they are playing under Ange Postecoglou, it’s high or nothing, that’s when it looks very bad. There is no in between.

“The last four years have been very difficult for Spurs – sometimes you look at them and think you know what you’re going to get, but it’s not Spurs.

“Spurs have style, character and personality as a football club – pride in the way they play – and he brings all those things.

“They should invest in that. I know they have finished fourth and second in the last seven or eight years but the fans should be happy with the way they finished fifth.

“Sometimes for a football fan it’s the way you finish fifth, it’s the way you lose because you know you’re going to have a good time. He brought a lot this season.”

Compared to other managers in the division, Postecoglou’s start has not been bad at all.

He has collected 60 points, 10 more than Arteta managed in his first season at Arsenal.

Likewise, Jurgen Klopp mustered just 58 points with Liverpool in his first campaign.

There are signs that Spurs are heading towards the top, but there is still a lot of work to be done in the transfer market and on the pitch if they are to challenge their North London rivals for the top spot next season. .
