The Impact Player Rule, increases the retention of players who are not included in the IPL agenda

Whether to maintain or suspend the Impact Player rule, and to increase the number of players who have not played in the reserve list section of each IPL team is on the agenda of the meeting between the IPL and the ten franchises, which will be held on Wednesday. The closed-door meeting will be held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai with the franchises represented by members of their respective ownership groups.

All these points were set by the IPL after its chief operating officer, Hemang Amin, met with various franchises over the past few months seeking feedback before finalizing next year’s big auction.

The question for the IPL, however, is whether the huge numbers contribute to the overall development of their brand and whether the fans like it. Or not.

Ahead of the 2022 auction, the IPL has allowed the original eight franchises to retain two uncapped Indian players and the two new teams – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants – can have one each. However, with these players making consistent plays, and with franchises devoting more resources to scouting them and improving their game, there may be a change.

It is understood that the franchises have put forward some proposals to Amin, one of which is to make a special allowance within the large pool of talent that has not been completed or to increase the number of RTM cards, with which the team can match the winning bid. in the auction of a player they had on their list until last season and brought him back.

Increased performance pay

During the talks, the IPL is understood to have told the franchises about the need to motivate the players financially as the teams are getting more money than before. One of the reasons for the IPL proposal is that it wants to improve the salary of a player who was bought at his auction price and kept at the same price even though his reputation has grown.

The IPL is believed to have proposed paying players a match fee, but a quick counter came from several franchises: what about the players sitting on the bench? Currently, as part of his contract, a player receives an optional payment from the franchise’s auction fund based on where the team finished the previous season. This number is set by IPL. One of the suggestions given by the IPL is that instead of the game money, it would be better to finalize the money that will be put into the incentive pot, which the company can use at its discretion to reward their players.

Overseas players

There are various proposals expressed by franchises regarding foreign players. At least one franchise has told the IPL that there should be no limits on the number of international players it can retain as long as it is in the final stage. So, if the IPL allows five total retentions, the franchise said it should be able to fill all the slots with international players if it wants to.

Buyers also told IPL that they believed overseas players were using micro-auctions to get huge sums of money. Some of these players, the franchises believe, have avoided large auctions where the fund is distributed equally with different teams that want to build from the ground up and therefore are very careful about how much money they spend on one player. In smaller auctions, as teams usually have a core already in place, they can go guns blazing on that one player to complete the side’s formation. Another proposal on the table is whether the IPL should make it compulsory for international players to sign up for the big auctions.

According to the head of the franchise, the IPL is also looking at putting a cap on small auctions. This will be based on the amount the franchise will set aside for their No. 1 pick prior to the big auction. Bidding in mini-auctions cannot exceed that number.

For example, if INR 20 crore is what the IPL decides a franchise should pay for its most retained player before the main auction, then in the mini auction the highest bid cannot exceed that. If there are teams still willing to bid more for that player, then, the franchises suggested, the silent tie-breaker option should come into play.

The silent tie-breaker was the method used in the previous IPL auction. Established in 2010, the tie-breaker was designed to be used in small auctions, where there is a small purse, to limit the length of time. In the history of IPL, three players have been bought through tie-breaker rules: Kieron Pollard (Mumbai Indians) and Shane Bond (Kolkata Knight Riders) in 2010, and Ravindra Jadeja (Chennai Super Kings) in 2012.

Those in favor of Wednesday’s meeting point out that although all the recommendations and suggestions are likely to be issued at the meeting, there is no certainty whether the IPL will announce its final decision on these issues soon.
