Ex-Crystal Palace man’s move to Champions League club ‘all but done’

Alexander Sorloth’s transfer from Villarreal to Atletico Madrid is ‘all done’, according to Matteo Moretto.

The 53-time Norwegian is a journeyman, with Crystal Palace, Gent, Trabzonspor and RB Leipzig just a few of his former clubs.

His spell with his former club in the Premier League has been uneventful, with the striker managing just one goal in 20 games across all competitions in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons.

However, Sorloth enjoyed a fine 2023/24 campaign, scoring 23 goals in 34 La Liga appearances for Villarreal to finish second to Girona’s Artem Dovbyk (24) in the Golden Boot race, taking his record to 26 out of 41 total. competitions.

That form has caught the eye of Atletico Madrid, who are looking for a new striker following the departure of Alvaro Morata to AC Milan and Memphis Depay at the end of his contract.

Sorloth is on the brink of a transfer to Atletico Madrid

According to Moretto, Sorloth is close to completing a move to the Metropolitano Stadium to become Atletico Madrid’s starting striker.

What remains to be resolved is Villarreal’s search for a replacement, with Getafe’s Borja Mayoral – who scored 15 goals in 27 La Liga games last season – their top target.

“Atletico Madrid have signed Alexander Sorloth, and they want him to be their number nine for the next few years. There is even an agreement in terms, but they are waiting until Villarreal arrests a replacement,” Moretto told Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing.

“Right now (Villarreal) is facing Borja Mayoral at Getafe, and they are trying to beat Real Sociedad.

“They have been negotiating with the Mayor for weeks, but they could not close the deal, since Umar Sadiq is still in the party, he has not left yet.”

“Soloth is finished.”
