Chelsea manager Maresca would like to keep Gallagher at Stamford Bridge

Enzo Maresca says he would like to keep Conor Gallagher at Chelsea and hopes the Englishman’s future will be settled soon.

Gallagher has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid amid reports that Maresca has doubts that the midfielder will be able to use his hard-hitting style of football.

But the former Leicester City manager said Gallagher had been offered a new contract at Stamford Bridge and that negotiations were still ongoing.

Speaking during the team’s trip to the United States ahead of his first season, Maresca said: “What I can say is that I know he is in contact with the team to find a solution.

“The team gave him a new contract. But this, for now, is the only news I have received.

“In football, every summer different clubs have problems with other players and then finally they find a solution and everyone is happy. I hope the same can happen in this case.

“The team we have, they are all players that if they are in the team, I will do everything possible to try to use them and help them understand the way we want to play.”

Asked if he would like to keep the 24-year-old, he added: “I would like to have them all.

“If you ask the same question to other managers, they will answer the same way. It’s the same problem every time.

“Until the player transfer window is opened, anything is possible to bring players or sell players. Unfortunately, until the last day, something happens.

“The most important thing at this moment in the team, for Conor and me, is that they will find a solution. This is a big goal.”
