On a rainy afternoon at Cherry Creek Golf Club in Michigan, Team USA held off a tough fight from their European counterparts to secure back-to-back victories in The Cairns Cup, golf’s premier handicap event.
After three grueling days of golf played in 30-degree heat, the match finished 12.5-11.5 in favor of the home team, with Team USA’s Brandon Williams sinking the winning putt for a narrow victory.
The first day started with a 4-2 win over the USA after four games, while Europe took the honors on the second day to reduce the deficit to one place.
The third day started with the athletes still needing 5.5 points to retain the trophy and six to win outright. However, it was Rutger Pranger from the Netherlands who scored the first match, leveling the scores.

But following the interruption of play by the predicted lightning, the USA was able to weather the storm in the afternoon, putting a red color on the scoreboard.
Brandon Williams, unaware of the magnitude of the putt he was facing, was a picture of calm as he watched his ball disappear into the cup to seal the win.
Asked how he feels about his country succeeding in the world, he said: “It’s amazing, it’s amazing! It’s a dream come true! This event has shown that the world of handicap golf has its own platform to grow the game of golf.”
