Canelo Alvarez Likes Gervonta Davis In Potential Showdown With Shakur Stevenson

Super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez feels Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis will beat Shakur Stevenson in a possible lightweight fight if it happens.

Canelo likes the power of WBA 135-lb champion Tank Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) and is able to pressure his opponents. In recent fights, Davis, 29, has looked impressive, stopping Frank Martin, Ryan Garcia, Hector Garcia, and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero.

A Defensive Style That Doesn’t Sell

Alvarez likes Shakur’s defensive ability but prefers Tank Davis’ ability over his own. The tank is powerful and has a fighting style more suited to professional levels than Stevenson’s amateur style.

“Shakur is a good fighter; he moves a lot, and it’s very hard to hit him, but I like Gervonta. He is a strong fighter, he hits hard and he knows how to go forward. So I would put my money on Gervonta,” said Canelo Alvarez speaking to Swaye Universe about the fight between Tank Davis, the undefeated WBA champion, and Shakur Stevenson of the WBC.

Shakur, 27, has lost confidence and struggled against Artem Harutyunyan and Edwin De Los Santos in his last two lightweight fights. The ringside fans booed loudly for both fights.

2016 Olympic silver medalist Stevenson has only three fights at lightweight since moving up to super featherweight in April 2023. Those three fights clearly show that Shakur is not at 135 and is fighting on borrowed time.

Stevenson competed at 126 and 130, but hasn’t looked the same since moving up to lightweight last year. The strength of the fighters at 135 seems to worry Shakur, making him afraid to exchange with them.

Unfortunately, you can’t be a superstar in boxing if you’re afraid to sell out, which is why Shakur has been knocked out in his last two fights.

He may need to drop down to 130 or 126 to save his career because he won’t fare well against Tank, Abdullah Mason, Vasily Lomachenko, or Raymond Muratalla.

Shakur, who hails from Newark, New Jersey, doesn’t have the strength and toughness to go up against dangerous lightweights. We saw that in Stevenson’s bout against Edwin De Los Santos last November, where he spent the entire fight backing away, looking scared.

Is Stevenson’s Chin Made of Glass?

Many fans thought he lost that fight, but the judges gave him the win. Afterward, Shakur and his promoters blamed his performance on his injury. However, Shakur looked awful in his last fight against Harutyunyan, and it is clear that he is not a popular fighter at this weight class.

The power of the lightweight fighters seemed to scare Shakur, and he may have hidden the glass in his chin. You don’t run the way Shakur does unless you’re concerned about your ability to take heavy shots.
