For a split second, it looked like the boxing world was being thrown on its head. There was Oleksandr Usyk, the walking talker from Ukraine, the holder of multiple heavyweight belts, the man who beat Anthony Joshua not once, but twice, writhing in pain from a shot by Daniel Dubois. Indeed, the famous Usyk was sent to the mat. The referee ruled that Dubois had been shot in the body, and insisted that Usyk give himself more time to recover. Everything was strange. A few rounds later, Usyk continued to stop Dubois, adding to the bitterness of Dubois and his team.
“I didn’t think it was a low blow,” Dubois said after it was all said and done, “and I was cheated out of a win.” That may or may not be true – but the good news for Dubois is that he still has a real chance to make his mark in the heavyweight division. No, he is not fighting Usyk in a rematch. However, he is facing a tough Joshua in the fight for the IBF heavyweight title. To say that there is a lot at stake for each man would be an understatement. By rebounding from the loss to Usyk with back-to-back wins over Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic, Dubois has earned himself another prestigious award.
However, defeating the legendary Joshua is no easy task. This man has learned from his defeat, and has become one of the best boxers in the sport, let alone a heavyweight. Focused and determined, Joshua looks to complete his redemption after this double defeat to Usyk in 2022. All he has to do to get back one of those world titles he’s had is defeat Dubois when they fight on September 21 in London. Wembley Stadium.
Dubois, however, doesn’t see himself as anyone’s stepping stone. Like Joshua, this man takes his business seriously. “I’m not here to talk nonsense,” said the fighter Queensbury YouTube page, “but I want to make a fool of AJ by knocking him out and put all the doubters and naysayers to sleep…this is definitely bigger than the Usyk fight. This is indeed a den of lions, this one.” Dubois made it clear that he sees next month’s fight as a changing of the guard.
“So you’ve been king for a long time,” he said of his neighbor Brit Joshua, “and now it’s my turn.”
