The Cubs released the right-hander Dan Straily again Kyle McGowin from their minor league contracts with the team, according to the Triple-A Iowa affiliate’s official career page. He signed with Chicago in April and McGowin signed in May, both pitchers returning to the minors after signing deals with the independent Atlantic League through the 2024 season.
Straily posted a 4.56 ERA over 803 1/3 innings with six different Major League teams from 2012-19, mainly the A’s, Marlins, and Reds. He followed that MLB stint with four seasons in Busan with the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization, via Straily and a brief stop in the Diamondbacks farm system in 2022. though that overall hit number masks some inconsistencies, primarily in the 2023 season where the righty only posted a 4.37 ERA in 80 1/3 frames before being released last July.
The results also haven’t been there for Straily in his age-35 season, as he has a 5.49 ERA, a 21.4% strikeout rate, and a 10.8% walk rate over 78 2/3 innings at Iowa. Most of the damage was done by the home run ball, as Straily gave up 18 home runs in a limited sample of his time with the Cubs’ major league franchise. Keeping the ball in the park was often a struggle for Straily during his big league career — he allowed a National League-high 31 homers in 2016 when he was a member of the Reds’ rotation, and gave up just an astounding 22 runs. 47 2/3 innings while pitching for the Orioles in 2019.
McGowin also had a tough time at Iowa this season, posting a 6.13 ERA in 10 innings and 47 Triple-A innings. The righty showed better form in Double-A (2.22 ERA in 28 1/3 IP) and in his brief stint with the Charleston Dirty Birds of the Atlantic League (2.70 ERA in 10 innings), but McGowin’s lack of success Iowa led the Lambs. breaking up with this 32-year-old.
McGowin’s big league resume features a 5.98 ERA over 64 2/3 innings, all with the Nationals in parts of each season from 2018-21.
