The Yankees, who were rained out on Friday, returned to doubleheader Saturday, meaning five of their players had each hit in the last four days. The importance of waivers is in order of standing, so teams with bad records will have first dibs. Even a team out of contention could take a shot at De Los Santos given those two years of control. But if they all go through, a certain club in the playoff race could benefit from a new arm that has had success in recent seasons, however, the Yankee is retired.
Cutting the lure of De Los Santos will thin the club’s bullpen, but they’ll get some of that back with Trivino. The righty underwent Tommy John surgery in May of last year and missed the entire 2023 season. He hit free agency and the Yanks re-signed him to a one-year contract with $1.5MM guaranteed and a $5MM club option for 2025, plus bonuses and an escalator that debuts 15 times this year.
Before this long injury layoff, he put up solid numbers. Most of that came with the Athletics, though he also came to the Yankees at the 2022 deadline as part of a trade. Frankie Montas trade. In all, he has 284 2/3 innings under his belt with a 3.86 ERA. His 10.6% walk rate is a bit high but his 24.5% strikeout rate and 47.4% ground ball rate are both strong.
