Luka Modric broke another record with a UEFA Super Cup win

Luka Modric has become the most decorated player in Real Madrid history after lifting his 27th trophy with the club on Wednesday.

The La Liga champions kicked off the European football season with a 2-0 win over Serie A side Atalanta – who won the right to face the Champions League winners after beating Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final in May – in the UEFA Super Cup.

The Spanish giants came out on top thanks to goals from Federico Valverde and new signing Kylian Mbappe – who marked his Madrid debut in spectacular fashion.

Croatia star Modric has also made headlines for his involvement in Wednesday night’s game, coming off the final 15 minutes to become the most decorated player in Madrid history.

Although the UEFA Super Cup was Modric’s first trophy as Madrid captain, it was his 27th title during his 12-year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu. The midfielder has won six Champions League titles, five Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four La Liga titles, two Copas del Rey and five Spanish Super Cups.

The 38-year-old, who joined Los Blancos in 2012 after leaving Tottenham Hotspur, has made more than 530 appearances for the club, playing a key role in the Spanish giants’ success since arriving in Madrid.

Modric’s 27th trophy takes him ahead of former captain Nacho Fernandez – who left the club as a free agent this summer. Dani Carvajal boasts 26 pieces of Madrid silverware, while Karim Benzema and Marcelo are tied on 25 medals.

Madrid will be hoping to see more success in what could be Modric’s final season at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2024/25. Their opening game of the season sees them travel to Mallorca on Sunday, while their Champions League debut is expected to take place in September.
