Welcome to Play Smart, GOLF.com’s regular game improvement column that will help you play smarter, better golf.

Lee Trevino is one of those rare golfers who can speak up just as he can play. Stay tuned to the Merry Mex opine for a while and you’re sure to learn something — especially when it comes to golf.

It makes sense that Trevino has a lot of experience when you look at his resume. During his career, Trevino won 29 times on the PGA Tour, claimed six majors and earned a place in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

One such area is Trevino’s whit and his brilliant ability around the green. And in today’s edition of Play Smart, we’ll hear from the man himself how to hit crisp chips on the green. Check it out below.

Trevino’s takedown tip

If you want to hit crisp chips around the green, you have to make sure you create consistent contact. One of the easiest ways to confirm this is by focusing on your hands and their relationship with the team.

According to Trevino, the biggest key is making sure the clubhead doesn’t cross your hands as you go through the impact area.

“The hands are still in the same place when I finish,” Trevino said. “I’m still in this position.”

By placing your hands in front of the clubhead, you eliminate the hand action that often leads to an inconsistent touch. If done correctly, the ball should come out nice and low with very little spin, making it easier to roll it into the hole.

Simple, easy and effective. Just what you want when trying to get up and down the green.
