ELON MUSK and JK Rowling are two of the people reportedly reported in a ‘cyberbullying’ lawsuit filed by Olympic champion Imane Khelif.
Social media exploded earlier this month when a video of Khelif stopping Italy’s Angela Carini in 46 seconds went viral.
The Algerian was disqualified from last year’s women’s world championships by the IBA due to the results of a ‘gender eligibility test’ but was cleared to compete in Paris by the International Olympic Committee.
Rowling, who wrote the Harry Potter books, and Musk criticized Khelif’s involvement in X, previously on Twitter. Referring to Khelif, Rowling wrote: “He is protected by a sports organization that denigrates women and enjoys the plight of the woman he just punched in the head.”
X’s owner Musk, on the other hand, wrote ‘absolutely’ while retweeting a ‘men don’t belong in women’s sports’ post with a photo of Carini.
And now Variety has reported that both have been named in a criminal complaint filed with French authorities over alleged ‘cyber harassment’ that followed Khelif’s participation in the Games.
Khelif’s lawyer, Nabil Boudi, reportedly confirmed that Musk and Rowling were both named in the complaint filed at the Paris Prosecutor’s Office on August 13, which has now begun an investigation.
They said: “On August 13, (the National Center for Combating Hate Crimes on the Internet) contacted the OCLCH (Central Office for the Fight Against Humanity and Hate Crimes) to conduct an investigation into cases of online harassment based on gender. , public insults because of gender, public incitement to discrimination and defamation of the public because of its origin.”
The case was filed against X, in particular, which will allow prosecutors to investigate all the people who may have directed hateful messages to Khelif.
Boudi emphasized that the investigation is not limited to Musk, Rowling or the public figures named. He said: “What we are asking is that the prosecutors not only investigate these people but anyone they see fit. If the case goes to court, they will be tried.”
