Benavidez Sr.’s Mixed Reaction In Berlanga’s Canelo fight
Coach Jose Benavidez Sr. is pleased with Edgar Berlanga’s selection by Canelo Alvarez for his three-time super middleweight title defense on September 14.
Jose Sr. was confused by the bombing of Berlanga
Jose Sr says he doesn’t understand why Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) recently yelled at him, saying that two faces for criticizing Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) for choosing him and being friendly when he sees him.
Benavidez Sr. he says he is happy that Berlanga got the fight. He hopes to beat Canelo because it will open up opportunities for other strikers like his son, David Benavidez, who has been overlooked.
Berlanga, 27, a Brooklyn native, said he would like to fight Benavidez after knocking out WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion Canelo in their fight next month, on DAZN PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. .
Berlanga says that if former two-time WBC champion Benavidez is willing to drop down to 168, he would like to fight him, as he feels that would be a big fight that would attract a lot of fans. The clash between Berlanga and Benavidez was going to be huge on PPV.
Jose Sr says that he does not see the fight between Canelo and Berlanga as interesting for him or the fans. He thinks the fans won’t want to see a Canelo vs. Berlanga match. He feels that Berlanga is not ready to have a fight like Canelo at this early stage of his career.
“Congratulate him for coming to the war. He is the chosen one,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. on Fighthype, in response to Edgar Berlanga being selected by Canelo Alvarez for his next fight on September 14th over David Benavidez.
Benavidez Sr hopes Berlanga’s win will open doors
“Even though he’s talking [stuff] it’s me who hates me. It’s hard to believe. I go to him. I want him to beat Canelo out,” continued Jose Sr. “You are strong; he is still young. If he wins, we all have a better chance.
“With Canelo, it’s very difficult. So, I’m rooting for him, I hope he can beat Canelo. “He is a good player and he has done a lot in boxing, and I think he believes that he can beat Berlanga because of his style,” said Jose Sr.
In this case, Jose Sr. is right. It is possible that Canelo chose Berlanga because he thinks he can beat him, but that can be done by any fighter. The only time fighters face someone they don’t think they can beat is when they’re given a big payday or when they’re in a position to challenge for a world title.
You can’t blame Canelo for picking Berlanga if he thinks he can beat him because he won’t do something crazy, like picking a guy to destroy him, like Artur Beterbiev. Benavidez didn’t want to fight David Morrell, and you can understand why. He might lose.
Jose Sr’s Bitterness and Jealousy?
“I don’t know if people want to watch that fight, to be honest with you,” said Jose Sr. regarding the Canelo vs Berlanga contest next month. “I don’t want to watch it. If I have other things to do, I’ll catch it on replay. It’s not like I’m going to stop what I’m doing and watch that fight. It’s not fun or what people want to see.”
Jose Sr. he sounds bitter about people who don’t want to watch Canelo vs. Berlanga. Many fans will be watching Canelo-Berlanga because it is fun and easily the best since Canelo’s trilogy against Gennadiy Golovkin.
“I just saw him where he was [Berlanga] he said,'[Bleep] David and his father again.’ I said, ‘What should I do?’ I just want to make it clear. There is no hate. Congratulations to him and his father and the team for making this happen,” said Benavidez Sr. regarding Berlanga’s selection to fight Canelo.
It is obvious that Berlanga saw something that Jose Sr said that made him leave the way he did because he is not the type to take revenge on someone without reason. Jose Sr. it sounds like he is not living up to what he said earlier when Canelo chose Berlanga over his son, David Benavidez, who has been waiting for that fight for five years.
There is obviously jealousy involved because Berlanga will make a lot of money with that fight against Canelo, probably more than Benavidez has made in any of his fights during his 10-year long career.
