Erik ten Hag explains Jadon Sancho’s omission from Man Utd’s win over Fulham

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag revealed the fitness issue that contributed to the decision to leave Jadon Sancho out of the team that will win against Fulham on Friday.

Sancho and Ten Hag agreed to put aside their public feud last summer and the defender returned to the first team in pre-season, even seeing competitive minutes off the bench late in United’s Community Shield defeat to Manchester City.

There was however no sign of Sancho in United’s matchday squad for their Premier League opener against Fulham, prompting speculation that a summer transfer could be on the cards. Paris Saint-Germain have been named as favorites and reports have even named Chelsea as potential suitors.

Asked to explain Sancho’s abandonment, Ten Hag revealed that the midfielder was battling illness while preparing for the match.

“First of all, we need the depth of the team, this season the best players will survive, I can only include 20 players in the team,” said Ten Hag. “Then Jadon had an ear infection a week ago, he was not 100% healthy.

“He could have played but we chose, we preferred [to have] others on the bench. But that could change. It will change.

“We can’t play everyone the same way, you can see today how important the underclassmen are. Sometimes it worries the player, but it affects the team, the club, there will be many players in this position, we expect them to fight for the team. “

90 min understands that PSG have made a fresh inquiry into Sancho’s situation this summer during talks with United about midfielder Manuel Ugarte, but their interest in the midfielder has not progressed to that stage yet.

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes has also been linked with a move, but PSG did not pursue a move before the 29-year-old signed his new contract at Old Trafford.

PSG have signed Desiree Doue from Rennes in a €50 million deal, suggesting their desire to sign a new player may be over.
