The result of Leicester vs Tottenham is my responsibility, said Postecoglou

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou called his players “wastes” after they dropped two points from the spot to win their 2024-25 Premier League season opener at Leicester City.

Spurs took the lead through defender Pedro Porro in the 29th minute and looked comfortable in the first half, only for Jamie Vardy’s 57th minute strike to earn the newly promoted Foxes a 1-1 draw.

“The first half was the best and we were in control of the game,” said Postecoglou, reflecting on the start of his second season in charge when speaking to Sky Sports.

“But we were wasting away in front of the goals. The second half was the same. We started well and when Leicester scored, the crowd got up and couldn’t contain themselves anymore.”

Leicester vs Tottenham

Spurs have won one of their seven away games since March 10, beating relegated Sheffield United on the final day of last season.

New £65 million player Dominic Solanke failed to capitalize on the first two clear chances, while Rodrigo Bentancur saw an effort well cleared by Wilfred Ndidi.

Richarlison returned from injury as a late substitute, heading home Lucas Bergvall’s well-placed free-kick.

“It was the same issue we had last year,” said Postecoglou. “We must continue to work hard and be brutal when we are in front of goal.

Sometimes we made bad decisions. When we are powerful, we must be invisible. We did everything to score goals and we didn’t score.”

Spurs ‘were not clinical’

“Dominating is good but if you don’t score it means nothing,” added Postecoglou. “We have to be strong in our mind in the third place. To waste an evening like that is disappointing. We weren’t just in the clinic.

“It’s not our football or our effort. To get results, you need to be very brutal in the last third. If we don’t, we won’t get the rewards we deserve for our football. The responsibility is on me. That’s why you train.”

Spurs will next play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (3pm BST) against Everton, who lost their first game 3-0 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.
