‘Zero Truth’ on Jeff Bezos Buying Celtics Rumors: Report

For over a month now, rumors have been swirling about the possibility of Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos buying a majority stake in the Celtics.

But another source close to the situation denied it.

Podcaster and Boston aficionado Bill Simmons added fuel earlier this week when he said, “…Over the last few days there has been talk that I think Jeff Bezos is buying the Celtics, and I think it’s true. I think he will be one of the sculptors.”

Simmons reports that he’s been scrutinized, considering the current owner of the Celtics wants to sell for nearly $6 billion and Bezos is one of the three richest men in the world.

Also, he recently became interested in buying the NFL team Washington Commanders.

But Nick Wingfield of Information disputes Simmons’ claims.

“Since Monday, the sports media has been buzzing about whether the billionaire founder of Amazon might be considering pledging to the team, after broadcaster Bill Simmons admitted to the rumor on an episode of his show,” Wingfield said. But according to a person close to Bezos, there is “no truth” to the idea that Bezos is interested in bidding for the group.”

NBC Sports’ Tom E. Curran spoke about his reservations in Monday’s Early Edition if Bezos were to become an owner.

“It’s going to be fun and it’s going to make the garden — or Amazon.com Stadium, whatever it turns out to be — a part of the world,” Curran said. “It will be different.

“Does it need this type of retro rocket to be installed in the region to move forward with others of its nature? I don’t know, I like it here, but maybe people would think that. … I’m nervous, but I see the good.”
