Newcastle are targeting the Chelsea defender among Marc Guehi’s ‘alternatives’

Newcastle United are ready to move forward in their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, with Chelsea’s Axel Disasi among their other targets, according to a report.

Guehi was heavily involved in England’s run to the Euro 2024 finals this summer, earning him national and international acclaim.

The Magpies have already seen four bids for Guehi rejected by the Eagles, with their latest worth £65m. Palace are said to be holding out for at least £70m, with chairman Steve Parish making it clear the club will only sell the defender for ‘star money’.

The upcoming sale of Joachim Andersen back to Fulham has also cast doubt on Palace’s willingness to part with Guehi in this transfer window.

Athletic reports that Newcastle are considering other options as they don’t seem willing to match Palace’s price, and while they haven’t completely given up on Guehi, several other players are being discussed internally.

Chelsea’s Diasi, who was left out of their matchday squad for the opening Premier League game of the season, is on Newcastle’s radar and has already expressed an interest.

Dasisi only joined the Blues in 2023 from Monaco and was a standout player at the back under former head coach Mauricio Pochettino, making 44 appearances in all competitions. He was also capped by France five times.

Newcastle are also in talks with Bayer Leverkusen about Edmond Tapsoba, who was targeted by Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur last summer. Tapsoba ended up staying and played a major role in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga-winning campaign.

Eddie Howe’s side opened the Premier League season on Saturday with a 1-0 home win against Southampton, despite defender Fabian Schar receiving an early red card.
