Bayer Leverkusen open their Bundesliga title defense tonight against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Xabi Alonso’s men won the title last season – finishing 17 points ahead of second-placed Stuttgart – and should be among the contenders again this season.
They haven’t had the smoothest of pre-seasons, however, with a Super Cup victory over Stuttgart requiring penalties while they managed equal games against Real Betis and Lens either side of a 4-1 drubbing by Arsenal.
Monchengladbach eased past Erzgebirge Aue 3-1 in the DFB-Pokal last week but have a poor record against Leverkusen, failing to win any of their last nine Bundesliga meetings, losing seven and drawing two.
