NHL Rumors: Thatcher Demko, and Yaroslav Askarov

Laura Diakun: “Welcome to our Director of Scouting now, Craig Button and Thursday’s trade of Craig between Winnipeg and Pittsburgh brought you the number 14 because both prospects were selected 14th overall in their respective drafts. We have Brayden Yager, now a member of the Jets, and we have Rutger McGroarty, now a member of the Penguins. What’s your decision on the trade, Craig?”

Craig Button: “They’re both A prospects, but looking at what Kevin Cheveldayoff was able to do in a situation where they couldn’t get Rutger McGroarty under contract. Now, there is a saying that sometimes you have to make chicken salad with something less than chicken. What Kevin Cheveldayoff was able to do here was make a chicken salad out of the main chicken.

NHL Rumors: Jacob Trouba and the Rangers, and Potential Trades for Rutger McGroarty

Brayden Yager is a really good prospect. In fact, when I say he’s a prospect like Rutger McGroarty, he’s a young player, but he’s a leader, and he has the ability to play in different situations in the game, he’s a complete player. In fact, I thought Bradyen Yager might be very close to being able to play in the NHL this year. Now, is that calculus going to change a bit? Maybe it will be.

But what Kevin Cheveldayoff was able to do was trade a really good player in Rutger McGroarty for a really good player in Brayden Yager. It was necessary because Rutger McGroarty had moved his goals to the Winnipeg Jets, and what Kevin Cheveldayoff was able to do was to get the same kind of prospects and certainly be able to keep his team competing and moving forward with a player who could really be. A good player, a contributor to the Jets, maybe as soon as this season.”
