NHL News: Some Yaroslav Askarov Trade Analysis

Yaroslav Askarov Traded to San Jose Sharks

NHL.com: Some believe the trade may be stalled until next week but the San Jose Sharks and Nashville Predators agreed to a trade late Friday afternoon. Nashville traded Yaroslav Askarov to San Jose.

San Jose acquired minor leaguer Nolan Burke and a 2025 third-round pick. Nashville received a conditional 2025 first-round pick. If that pick is in the Top 10, the Sharks get to pick their pick or the Vegas Golden Knights’ pick they get in the Tomas Hertl trade.

NHL news: Sharks and more

Also, Nashville picked up David Edstrom and Magnus Chrona (prospect forward and goaltender) from the San Jose organization (breakdown below via PuckPedia).

The work was done for weeks in secret. However, when Askarov made a public announcement, the winds of error became intense rumors. The move was inevitable.

Yaroslav Askarov Naturally Signs Bridge Extension

Max Miller of Hockey News: Many rumors suggest that Askarov will immediately sign an extension once it is received by the team. That proved true again Friday evening as Yaroslav Askarov signed a two-year extension worth $4 million.

PuckPedia break this down like this:

By extension, Askarov will not be a free agent until the 2027-28 season. He will still be only 25 years old.

It looks like Mike Grier has found his future goal with Askarov. Grier has reportedly been eyeing Askarov for over a year. How much time do you see in San Jose this season is a good question? Many pundits and pundits thought he was definitely in trouble this season.

The 2020 11th overall pick made his way to the NHL. Yes, there are some antics. Barry Trotz honestly didn’t want him to play for Nashville (hence the signing of Scott Wedgewood).

However, his ability to handle the puck, read shooters, and make saves is a big reason why a team like San Jose moved so quickly to make a deal.

San Jose Sharks Goaltender “Jam”

Puckpedia: There are now three goal scorers in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks.

The good news for San Jose is that Vitek Vanecek and Mackenzie Blackwood are only under contract for one more season. Both became unrestricted free agents at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

NHL Rumors: Talking about goaltenders like Jeremy Swayman

This could be a short-term uptick and given the injury history of Vanecek and Blackwood, Askarov could be the starter before too long. It is said that the Russian goalkeeper will have no problem going to Barracuda. Then again, he might not be around for long.
