NHL Rumors: Columbus Blue Jackets, and Boston Bruins

Teams want to use the space of the Columbus Blue Jackets

Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch: The Columbus Blue Jackets didn’t have to retain any salary — $8.7 million in cap hit and $9.1 million in salary over two years — when they moved Patrik Laine to the Montreal Canadiens. The Blue Jackets now have about $18.2 million in projected salary cap space.

GM Don Waddell said flexibility is important: “We were able to get a great young player in Jordan Harris while maintaining financial flexibility in this deal, which is very important to us.”

Other teams Waddell was talking to wanted the Blue Jackets to keep half of Laine’s salary. Their goal was not to save money.

Waddell has received calls from other teams looking to hire the Blue Jackets to alleviate their own problems.

Keefe: “Jeremy Swayman, as we know, has not signed a contract with the Boston Bruins. Camp starts with them soon. He says, ‘what’s going on there?’

He went to join the team last year. Wasn’t happy about that. Very publicly, he was not happy about that.

And ‘Scoops Keefe’ here to report or read, no report really, we’re doing something, right? Jeremy Swayman, he wants $10 million a year.”

Adam Jones: “I’m sorry?”

Keefe: “That’s the scoop I have. He wants $10 million a year. That would put him with Sergei Bobrovsky and Carey Price. Price signed that monster contract a few years ago. He still earns an average of 10.5 million a year. Bobrovsky is 10 years old (millions). Everyone else is below that. (Andrei) Vasilevsky is nine and a half. (Connor) Hellebyck is eight and a half years old. (Ilya) Sorokin is 8.25.

So I think a lot of speculation was, if he gets to eight, that makes him the sixth highest paid goalkeeper. But from what I believe, he would like $10 million.”

  • Colby Cohen: “Swayman’s reports are wrong. The parties are taking their time to reach an agreement but people are confused because they think that he asked for 10M he should rest easy…. because that is not asked.”

Trade Analysis: Jets Trade McGroarty For Penguins Yager

Jones: “Which also put him third.”

Keefe: “That will get him arrested a second time.”

Jones: “I’m sorry, I’m dead for a second.”
