Any visitor to St. Andrews we know that Dunvegan is a break from the worst days at the Old Course.
The cozy, 18-green-close-up is one of the most popular watering holes in all of golf, relying on its museum-like interior and world-renowned guards to fend off competition from all kinds of close-ups. It could be said that a cold pint in Dunvegan warms the soul, but that doesn’t explain why the pub welcomed an unexpected guest on Sunday evening: Nelly Korda.
Korda, you may know, is hours removed from a heartbreaking finish at the AIG Women’s Open, where she three-shotted her last five holes to lose twice in the tournament. For a golfer with Korda’s skill set and the expectations of a tournament with the meaning and history of the Old Course, an 8-iron to the hips might be better than spending the hours following the finish surrounded by the great St. Louis golf community. And yet, in the hours following the loss, that’s exactly what he did. Korda headed to Dunny’s, where he was photographed next to bartenders wearing a sweatshirt that read “It costs zero dollars to be a good person.”
Details on the remainder of his visit to the world’s most famous golf course remain scant, but in this instance, his appearance at the bar alone speaks volumes.
At the end of a big season that has seen Korda rise to one of the highest points of his professional life – and come under scrutiny for his handling of the spotlight – Korda’s small feat on Sunday in St. Andrews gives us a rare glimpse into the life of a leading star golfer when the cameras are off.
It will take time for Korda to shake off Sunday’s loss at the Old Course, especially as she watched another one-time neophyte, Lydia Ko, pick up a redemptive victory in her place. But it will be easy after the evening in Dunvegan.
