Why Chelsea’s move to Victor Osimhen fell through

Chelsea’s pursuit of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen collapsed after the Blues offered a base salary that was less than half of his current salary, a report claims.

Osimhen has been a top target throughout the summer window and negotiations accelerated in the last few days when it became clear that Napoli were willing to lower their asking price and no longer wanted his release clause of more than £100m.

Deadline day was rife with reports of heated meetings between Osimhen’s Chelsea representatives. The Blues are believed to have agreed a transfer fee with Napoli but could not agree on Osimhen.

In accordance with Gianluca Di MarzioChelsea’s offer for Osimhen includes a basic salary of £3.4m, rising to £6.8m for Champions League qualification and a string of bonuses.

Osimhen, who currently earns £9.3m a year at Napoli, did not accept that, and Chelsea refused to improve their offer.

Deadline day was chaotic for Osimhen, who had agreed personal terms with Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli. There were reports of an agreement for a transfer fee with Napoli, but the Serie A side are believed to have increased their demands by £4.2m to £71.6m, which angered Al Ahli and eventually saw them turn to Ivan Toney instead. about half the price.

What makes things worse for Osimhen, he has been left out of the Napoli team during the Serie A season, with manager Antonio Conte adamant that he will not use the Nigerian player.

There are still a few days left before the Saudi transfer window closes, so Osimhen’s future may not be sealed yet, but he now faces the prospect of spending the next four months on the sidelines until the January window opens.
