Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has said he would have preferred to keep Scott McTominay rather than sell him to Napoli.
McTominay completed a move to the Italian giants on deadline day, with United set to accept a £25.4m fee for the midfielder.
With McTominay arriving at United’s academy, his sale will be seen as an important pure profit when it comes to staying within the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability (PSR) rules.
In a press conference on Friday, shortly before McTomonay’s transfer to Napoli, Ten Hag complained about how the rules encourage the Red Devils to get money for a player they wanted to keep.
“I am very happy for him but it is a matter of different emotions because I would not prefer to lose him,” said Ten Hag.
“He is Man Utd in everything, he was important to Man Utd, he was here for more than 22 years but unfortunately the rules. Local players bring more importance and it’s not the right thing to do but everyone, in all parts, it’s a good thing Scott is happy about it, and Napoli and us “

McTominay was one of two Scottish midfielders Napoli brought in towards the end of the window, with Billy Gilmour also joining Brighton & Hove Albion. The pair were among the key players targeted by new coach Antonio Conte this summer.
While McTominay’s exit was painful, United have at least bolstered their options by signing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
The Uruguayan completed his move to Old Trafford on Friday night after United reached an agreement with PSG for an initial fee of £42.2m plus £8.4m in add-ons.
