Duleep Trophy 2024, first round – Ishan Kishan dropped, Sanju Samson replaced

Ishan Kishan was ruled out of the first round of the Duleep Trophy due to a groin injury. Sanju Samson has been named as his replacement in the India D team.

Kishan sustained the injury during the Buchi Babu tournament earlier this month in Tamil Nadu where he played two matches in Jharkhand, his first set of multi-day matches in over a year. India D will open their campaign against India C led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, on September 5, in Anantapur.

Allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, meanwhile, has been cleared to play and is now available for selection for India B. Reddy, who underwent a sports hernia operation in June after being left out of India’s T20I squad for Zimbabwe, was initially ruled out.
Meanwhile, India A will be without fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, who is still recovering from a quadriceps injury. Prasidh has returned to form following four months of retraining, but the National Cricket Academy coaches want to tread carefully, now that he has been hampered by injuries for the better part of two seasons.

Prasidh last played for India during the December-January tour of South Africa, and it is believed that he is about to reach his peak. He may still take part in the later rounds of the Duleep Trophy before the Ranji Trophy.

The absence of Kishan and Prasidh adds to the growing list of Indian players who have been ruled out of the tournament for various reasons. Earlier this week, Suryakumar Yadav’s return to first-class cricket had to be put on hold after he injured his hand, also during the Buchi Babu tournament, playing for Mumbai in Coimbatore. A BCCI release said the medical team is continuing to assess his injury, and that further tests next week will determine his availability for the second round.
Earlier, the fast bowling of Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik had been ruled out due to dengue fever, while Ravindra Jadeja was withdrawn from the India B team. Navdeep Saini was named as Siraj’s replacement for India B, and Gourav Yadav, the Puducherry fast bowler, was called up to replace Umran in India C.

The first round of the Duleep Trophy will be played in Anantapur and Bengaluru from September 5. It is the only round where some of India’s top Test players – including Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav – will play there in the front. they are disbanding to get ready for India’s Test season which begins against Bangladesh in Chennai from September 19.

The Indian team is likely to meet in Chennai on September 12 for a short preparatory camp ahead of the series.
